People are often surprised that a one-way cab from Mumbai to Surat is not simply half the price of the return. Once you know how the cost is actually built, the numbers make sense.
The empty return leg
When you book one way, the car still has to get home. Unless the operator finds a return passenger for that exact route on that exact day, the vehicle drives back empty — and someone has to cover the fuel, tolls and driver time for those kilometres. That is the single biggest reason a one-way fare is more than half a round trip.
On busy corridors like Mumbai–Surat, where return demand is reliable, operators can price one-way trips much more keenly than on quiet routes. This is exactly why a well-travelled route is usually better value per kilometre than an obscure one.
What else goes into the fare
- Distance and the vehicle class you choose — a sedan, an SUV and a seven-seater have genuinely different running costs
- Tolls along the route, normally charged at actuals
- State entry taxes and permits where the trip crosses a state border, as Mumbai–Surat does
- A driver allowance on longer trips and overnight stays
- Time of travel — very early departures and late-night arrivals may be priced differently
Which should you book?
If you are returning within a day or two and your plans are firm, book the round trip — you are paying for the return leg either way, so you may as well be in the car for it. If you are staying longer, your return date is uncertain, or you are flying back, book one way. Paying a car to wait several days is far more expensive than two separate one-way trips.
